Diverse and Inclusive Practice: Redrawing the Boundaries

Domestic Violence, Cultural Safety & Disability

Novotel Brighton Beach

Brighton-Le-Sands, Sydney 8 -9 November , 2007

On the 8th and 9th of November this year, workers from the disability, domestic violence community and Government gathered together for the first national Forum on domestic violence and women with disability since the Victorian Government hosted its cross-sectoral workshop ten years ago. The Forum was held at the Novotel Hotel, Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney.

Many of the same issues emerged at this Forum as those which were canvassed in the nineties. Yet there was renewed energy and passion brought to the problems caused by service gaps, inaccessibility, inadequate training and exclusion of the needs of women with disability. At the Diverse and Inclusive Practice Forum, issues were firmly located in the broader context of recognising diversity in domestic violence service provision, policy and legal protection, which provided a challenge to services and government alike.

The Forum had been designed to maximize participation around the stimulation and challenge from keynote speakers. For details about the speakers, (final program link). Delegates discussed and raised many other issues, noted so many challenges and suggested many ways forward. Large numbers of workers left energised and enthusiastic about bringing change to their own organisations.

The Clearinghouse looks forward to assisting the Forum in advancing these solutions.
